Cisco Router Maintenance
The most basic operation of router maintenance is to use the console cable to connect to the computer for configuration. Newly bought routers, routers that are disconnected from the network, and routers that are not configured with web mode or telnet, ssh and other modes need to be configured in this way.
1. Prepare a console cable, a computer with an RS232 (commonly known as 9-pin serial port) interface, if there is no RS232 computer, you can also buy an RS232 to USB cable, which can be connected to the console cable and converted into a USB interface.
2. Connect one end of the console cable like the NIC connector to the port marked console on the router.
3. Run the terminal emulation program on the PC, go to Start→Programs→Accessories→Communications→HyperTerminal (such as Windows XP/Windows 2000 HyperTerminal, the following configuration takes Windows XP as an example), select the serial port connected to the device, and set the terminal Communication parameters: The transmission rate is 9600bit/s, 8 data bits, 1 stop bit, no checksum and no flow control
4. When the device is powered on, the device self-check information is displayed on the terminal. After the self-check is completed, the user is prompted to type Enter, and then a command line prompt will appear.
Precautions
1. Since the serial port of the PC does not support hot swapping, please do not insert or unplug the serial port from the PC when the device is powered on. When connecting the PC and the device, please install the DB-9 end of the configuration cable to the PC first, and then connect the RJ-45 to the device; when removing, first unplug the RJ-45 end, and then pull out the DB-9 end.
2. Windows 2008 Server, Windows 7, Windows Vista or other operating systems without HyperTerminal need to use third-party software to connect, such as secureCR, Putty, etc.
